I was looking through my icons, saw this one, and had a MAD craving for Christmas. My seasonal senses are fail.

As I have not posted in a metric forever, I am again going to try and get back into things. However, I am also going to cheat! Since there are new people on my list, I am going to pass along a question my uncle asks basically everyone as soon as he meets them:

"What are you looking forward to?"

Regarding my last "entry", any f-list cutting is cancelled because basically everyone I wasn't sure about said they DID read my journal after all. Even if there might be a few who didn't answer, I was wrong enough in my assumptions that I'll happily give them the benefit of the doubt ;]

[Poll #1414646]

I'm just curious who actually reads me on my f-list. I've been toying with the idea of my first friends cut, only because I've accumulated a fair number of people who I don't seem to interact with. I thankfully don't have anyone on here I dislike or anything, but it's finally gotten a bit out of hand. But before I do anything (assuming I do at all) I'd like to know who actually reads my crap anyway, when I do post once in a blue moon ;]

So, I got the job recently doing telephone research. People keep asking, "WTF is that? What do you do?"

I have also, recently, been feeling sad about not doing anything really, really nerdy. This post will address BOTH those concerns.

At work, I call people and ask them to complete surveys over the phone. 80% of the time, I get a busy signal, answering machines, it rings out, etc. 19% of the time, someone picks up and either can't do it then, or tell me to fuck off in some variety of language. I then mark the survey ended on the computer, and enter the flag for the reason it ended (busy, refused, etc.) OCCASIONALLY, I get someone to complete a survey... if they don't get most of the way through and bail on me because it took too long.

This is MORE boring than it sounds. Sooo... I invented a game to pass the time ;]

On a notepad, I mark down two columns for my two "characters". They are marked "even" and "odd". Both start with 50 hit points.

When I start a new call, I first check the case number assigned to them. If the last digit is even (including 0), then it is "even"s turn. Odd, vice versa. I then check the last digit of the phone number, and save it for later (0 = 10). I will call it X.

What happens next depends on how the call ends. If nobody answers, not even a machine, the turn is skipped.

If I get an answering machine, a busy signal, or a refusal, that character inflicts X damage on the opposing character. If I complete a survey, they do 4x that amount of damage to the opposing character.

If I get a language problem, a "number not in service", or make an appointment for later, then the characters recovers X damage instead. If I start a survey, but they bail for any reason partway, then they instead heal 4x that amount.

If I get a fax/modem line or I call a business, then that character takes X damage to themselves. If I get someone who asks to be put on our Do Not Call list, they take 4x damage to themselves.

...I ended up playing this as I called for 5 hours. For the curious, Even won, with 71 HP to spare when Odd dropped beneath 0. It was close, and Odd was in the lead for a long time, but Even recovered 40 when some asshole bailed on my survey partway, with their phone number ending in 0. It was tense.

So yeah, this is what I do ;]

As my family is random, we're going up north for the weekend to a cottage for snow and tobogganing. I'll be around randomly a bit today and tomorrow morning, but then gone until sometime Sunday night. As there is NO tech there, I'll be totally out of contact, so no-one die in my absence. That includes general maimings.

Woke up groggy this morning, read my friends list, saw everybody crying about massive snowstorms all over. Didn't bother to look out my window, because seriously... what are the odds of it being a winter wasteland everywhere from the 33rd parallel to the 43rd parallel?

...apparently 1:1. It's God's bukkake party out there.

Also, I got new winter boots. This is not typically LJ-worthy news, except that these boots have solid steel plates embedded in the soles to make them puncture proof. I bought them in SPITE of this, because they were warm, waterproof, and altogether everything else I wanted. And they ARE good boots. They just also weigh a fucking TON. I feel like I'm walking around with cars tied to my feet. While this is bloody torture NOW while I slog through snow... a few more weeks of this, and I'll be able to kick in tanks.

I have had reason today to remember a LOT of my weird quirks.

The only one worth repeating here, however, is how I used to eat my Cheerios when I was young.

I'd take the bowl with cheerios and milk, and eat JUST one half down to the milk, so there was a wall of cheerios consisting the other half. Some cheerios would always fall into the milk side, though, because the "wall" falls apart.

I'd pretend the wall was a mighty empire, and the stray cheerios were rebels from the empire fighting against it. So I'd eat them. But as I did, the milk would shake more cheerios loose. These were more people rebelling against the aggressive destruction of the rebels. Eventually, the whole "empire" would dissolve into chaos and rebellion, and I'd have to put them all down.

I think I started this when I was in grade 2 or 3 ;/ It vaguely concerns me how GLEEFUL I was, decimating those "rebels" and knowing I was the bad guy they were increasingly rebelling against.

Eh!

Saw Repo! for the second time tonight. Even BETTER the second time. I love having a new obsession ;]

I've been flitting around, seeing all the people I kept saying "We should get together sometime" to. It's been quite nice to remember I DO have some real life friends after all, even if we are all too damn busy most of the time. I've thoroughly abused myself over the past week(?) or so; it's kinda nice. I've done far too little for too long, but mostly because there has been little to do that really struck me. It's been good.

I'm now back in classes for semester #2, hopefully going a BIT better than the last. I'm not going to get deeply into it, but there is certainly room for improvement ;/ BUT, I have optimism. Being in class for only one day so far helps that!

The only thing left on my agenda is to find something to get particularly excited about in my future; I need something to look forward to strongly. But I figure that's just a matter of time and circumstance, so I'm patient for the moment. All in all... I'm doing pretty well.

It's rare that I am willing to go out of my way to say that, so I just wanted that documented ;]

(P.S: That movie has given me a MAD crush on Sarah Brightman.)
